Bird first showed at the "Reality Does Not Impress Me" exhibition in London, 2023. At the time it felt like the world had hit a low point. Perhaps people recognised some of themselves in her fragile balance, safe yet so close to disaster. I felt it too. I did not set out to make a picture about balance. I made her in a year that wobbled, and she wobbled with it, and somehow that is why she held.
